DERIVAT is an open and collective initiative that invites artists, curators and other practitioner of the art world to reflect on the contemporary art market and its practices. This platform aims to open discussions on alternative economic models that give artists the possibility to work independently as well as opening the art market to a new audience.
Among live events and roundtables, this store is one of our projects.
Curated and run exclusively by artists, 3 points were important to us:
1 - Supporting and empowering artists
As artists, we often have broad knowledge and skills. Technical, historical, political. Yet, a very small percentage of us live from their own work or use its skills in a fulfilling « side-job ».
This store is an alternative means of financing our projects, productions and research.
2 - Making Art accessible
Throughout the course of human history, Art has held a significant role within our societies. Artists observe, feel, question, highlight, materialise. However, it's noteworthy that artworks are often regarded as exclusive and opulent possessions.
This store offers the possibility to a new audience to access art. Artists themselves, your neighbours, your parents?
3 - Re-valuing art works
Making models, tests and mistakes is part of our practice. We store unsold pieces and generate waste.
This store gives a new life to some of our art works, editions, forgotten pieces and lost materials.
Ideally, and in order to not feed consumerism, artists propose existing pieces and/or pieces made from leftover materials. But that’s not a set rule. Every artist does what fits their practice best.
